So we started getting our CSA shares 2 weeks ago. A lovely farm out in Granby MA grows us some delicious food but then nicely delivers it to us here in Somerville on wednesdays. so nice.
The strawberries have been delicious and this weeks are already gone
last week they got used in alot of strawberry shortcake, ha ha but this week for munching and on oatmeal.
The greens have been a bit overwhelming. Like this week we got 2 (more, on top of the 2 we weren;t finished with form last week) heads of lettuce AND collard greens, AND edamine, AND the greens on the kohlrabi and beets which are apparently edible.
The beets and their greens I used in this beet and greens risotto reciepe. I’m too lazy to go look it up, but it was more effort than I will probably spend again as it was tasty but not overwhelmingly so. Which is to say it was edible but not screaming to be starred and referred to often or anything.
I’d never seen a kohlrabi before, but using the farm’s handy dandy reciepe pages I found it easy enough to peel the cool purple skin off and cook it with butter and onions. yum. not alot of unique flavor just mildly sweet. apparently added to mashed potatoes its really yummy. maybe next time.
I have been trying to add greens to my smoothies in an effort not to waste them, to eat them without having to taste them too much, and to get rid of them at more than just supper.
yesterday I could hardly tell the greens were in there. Today I add a little bit more and there was no mistaking the green color and the occasional not small enough leaves coming up my straw (the magic bullet didn’t handle them well at first, but a little more coconut milk helped
). It was drinkable after the addition of more coconut milk and while I will be aiming for less greens than that, its still a useful way to get rid of them.
but edamine? seriously, what am I going to do with the truckload of that? Its a really big head of it and its a bit too bitter to just sneak into a salad (not that I am not trying, I’m just saying…it will be noticed).
One reason we choose this farm is we can go and pick extra things for no extra charge, so the kids and I are hoping to pack up next tuesday for a little diversion from the move and go get us some more strawberries.
We will not be looking to pick more edamine, even if that is an option
at least next week when I am feeding everyone on paper plates and from plastic bowls, they will be having plenty of green stuff…and next week we may pawn off any extra greens on unexpecting moving help, because I am not researching unique greens recipes while moving ![]()
